Congratulations to The Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development for winning the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award 2011 for “Best in a Marine Environment”.

The award is recognition for the fantastic work that PCSD has done in bringing the communities of the Placencia Peninsula together to work towards sustainable practices.

I recently toured Placencia lagoon with many of the stakeholders of PCSD and was particularly impressed by the work they are doing with mangrove reforestation. There is however a lot of work left to do in order to educate many of the larger developers on the Peninsula about sustainable practices. Mangrove deforestation, unregulated construction and a lack of legal enforcement, over-fishing and the pollution and pesticides flowing into the lagoon with the resulting impact on water quality are of particular concern.
