Juvenile Solitary Eagle shot at Alta Vista

The Belize Raptor Research Institute (BRRI) has just published an investigation report into the shooting of a juvenile Solitary Eagle in the vicinity of Alta Vista, Stann Creek District.

Roni Martinez along with Andy and Joanna Bradshaw, volunteers with BRRI headed to Alta Vista on Boxing Day to gather vital information and to speak to local farmers to try and avoid any further incidents in the future.

Their trip wasn’t in vain and provided a good example of how community outreach and education can make a difference in protecting Belize’s biodiversity. Further good news was revealed when it became obvious that there is another pair of Solitary Eagles in the vicinity. Further field trips will be made in the spring of 2012 to help widen research on Solitary Eagle density to other protected areas in the region.
